While sketching the local windmill at Wimbledon Common I became interested in the shapes created by the mill house and the sails silhouetted against the sky. Looking further around Surrey for windmills I was excited to find many examples waiting with outstretched arms, bearing witness to a bygone age.

Each has an individual character: tall, slender, bulky, round, hexagonal.
